"Materialism is the only form of distraction from true bliss." —Douglas Horton
Since the advent of post-WW2 consumer-fascist society, and especially since the onset of 'NeoLiberalism' beginning in the 1980s, we find ourselves trapped inside a self-imposed, self-annihilating, pathological neurosis — a monstrously obsessive infatuation with filtering our relationship with reality (both internal and external) through the illusory lens of materiality. The cult-worship, reductionist, totalitarian ideological perception that planet Earth, and by extension the Universe, is nothing but a predeterministic, mechanistic machine dictated by material solidity has caustically led the human species towards an unimaginable state of deepening crises opening the floodgates to an unprecedented planetary emergency — while the overwhelming majority amble on in a pretentious delusion as though there is nothing to be concerned about.
Indeed an interesting phenomenon we have seen unfold in the age of blind consumption, regardless of how it will impact future generations (who we supposedly care about), is a psychotic fetish for validating the illusion of materiality — underscored by unnatural tendencies towards acquisitiveness, self-interest, ownership, possessiveness and egomania. This unquenchable, parasitic value-distortion has consequently paved the foundations for our lives to become dominated, hypnotized and consumed by it. The blurred lens through which to view this world dominated by materiality exists mostly as a control mechanism; a meticulously concealed, subliminal, self-preservation mechanism leveraged shrewdly by the established order. Even the concept of time itself became industrialized, artificially packaged and commodified. Industrializing the construct of time further adds another layer of control to this mechanism — acting as a propagational catalyst for categorizing time as belonging to the artificial realm of the material. Time (as conceptualized to being something solid) essentially reinforces the illusory existence of past and future. The perception that a past and a future exist reveals the linearity of the human mind. Materiality and Linearity are two sides of the same coin. The truth is, which is difficult for the material-obsessed mind to understand, is that there is only the eternal now — moment to moment. A mind that clings to a linear thought processes is the most susceptible candidate to being psychologically corrupted by the illusion of time in the context of materiality. The industrial mind is consumed by linearity. Basically, the idea that time is a "thing" within the parameters of a straight line is a kind of a self-deception giving false credence to the flimsy notion that it is something which can be measured by human-made tools i.e clocks, graphs, charts and numbers.
We are living in a global dictatorship of numbers, even to the extent wherein the entire web of life on this planet, of which human beings are a small fraction, are only as good as the numbers with which they are associated. Earth consists of a diversity of verbal and written languages, but the one language that everyone in the industrial world is structurally coerced and indoctrinated to speak is the language of numbers. A brilliant scientist who works to better humanity — who works with the tangible reality (which is to say that s/he works with observational and experimental evidence) may win awards such as a Nobel prize, or invent/create something prolific — but s/he will not be considered to be someone worthy of elevation above the status of a genius. But a mathematician, "economist", or theoretical physicist, whether known or unknown, is very often recognized to be resting upon the status of a god. They all share one thing in common — they are all exclusively and explicitly devoted to the pseudo-scientific worship of number-based abstraction. Yes... a mathematician works with highly complex equations etc, but the discipline fundamentally deals with nothing but abstract representations of speculative realities. The field of theoretical physics is coined as 'theoretical' quite appropriately as it functions primarily to concoct theories with glamorized, unsubstantiated, number-based jargon — a viciously compartmentalized field of information that few can even begin to grasp. Even if a mathematician conjures a remarkable equation/theory that is applicable to the tangible — does it encourage or address radical solutions to effectually eradicate poverty, war, structural violence and mental illness? No... All of which needlessly continue to be rampant plagues upon the modern world — a world in which mathematicians, economists etc would delusionally and arrogantly claim to be the pinnacle of human "progress".
Theories however in the context of scientific investigation and examination are more accurately defined as 'hypotheses' because they are based on evidence-based plausability, whereas the disciplines associated with Mathematics and its counterparts are based on number-oriented masturbation that invariably lead to undefinable conclusions often upheld as divine prophecy. In reality, the world of numbers and digits is flagrantly impotent at contributing anything of real substance to the evolution, integrity and well-being of the human family — as clearly demonstrated by the total lack of social concern inherent within the institution of numbers. Like money, numbers are seen to have value in and of themselves — serving as the most destructive influence in distorting the very essence of what is perceived as worthy of being treated as actual 'value'.
In the West, Mathematics is an institution rarely challenged. It is the one subject taught in school (indoctrination camps designed to groom humans specifically for the industrial, labor-for-income economic machine) that is intensely propagandized and peddled as being the most invaluable and indisputable prerequisite source of knowledge. It is one of the cornerstone pillars of western civilization itself. Why? Because it is the unspoken religion of industrial civilization, to which all must comply — the absolute deification of measurement. It seems to be in the hands of the gods, decipherable only by the self-designated priests acting as the unquestioned mediums for extracting meaning from the mirage of digits sprawled endlessly across the giant screen of nonsense — manufactured out of the ashes of a defiled planet.
The dogma of numbers in combination with the ruthless frenzy for "things" and 'quantity over quality' is increasingly pervasive, and is enmeshed throughout the entire spectrum of languages with which industrial humans speak — making it literally codified into how industrial humans communicate and integrate with reality. Phrases and words such as 'how much', 'how many', 'I have', 'property', 'possessions', 'yours', 'mine', 'more' etc are just some of numerous examples of material-based terminology firmly entrenched within the psyche of Industrial Man. Holistically speaking, the phenomenon being explored here, at this stage of human and ecological degeneration, appears to be impossible to escape unless the collective consciousness makes a sudden and radical shift, in turn forcing the entire human species to reevaluate the very efficacy of its linguistic methodologies and syntactic assumptions — thereby incentivizing a whole new 'linguistic operating system' if you will.
Interestingly enough, what is grossly unknown and worthy of mentioning, is that there happens to be one element within the world of mathematics that does deserve attention, which by no surprise has been suppressed by and omitted from every single curriculum within our rigid, factory-style, institutionalized education system. I am of course referring to a field of knowledge known to the ancients as 'Sacred Geometry'. If you've heard of terms like 'flower of life', 'seed of life', 'Fibonacci sequence/spiral', 'the phi ratio', 'the golden mean' etc they all fall under the umbrella of sacred geometry. I won't delve into the intricate details of this knowledge here, but if you are interested in learning more on the subject — the link here is a good introduction.
The exquisite irony in being controlled hand-over-fist by a material-based paradigm is that it led to a transmutation into a sycophantic fealty towards its direct antithesis — the immaterial — i.e debt, money, emblems, symbols and so forth. And to exacerbate this irony even further — control itself is an ego-constructed illusion — meaning that the illusion of materialism is itself directed by illusion — layers upon layers of illusion ad infinitum. The material-based paradigm therefore has an inherent reliance on socially crippling illusions associated with and capitalized by the insanely outdated and violent institutions of politics, organized religion, and monetary-market/Infinite growth economics. In other words, fundamentalist materialism is a form of psychic tyranny, no different to countless other forms of ideological dogma. The intelligence-insulting contradiction of worshiping materiality, while equally and irrationally fetishizing immateriality is truly a mind-bending phenomenon intensely difficult to make sense of.
The cult ideology of materialism very successfully turned human beings into fearful, malignant, malleable slaves. It is an ideology that automatically engenders separation; an ideology that created a cultural mindset that hijacks a human being's perception of reality coaxing him/her to become both scared of living (never comprehending or ever having the capacity to experience what it means to truly live) and scared of dying — the key ingredients for producing the perfect slave. Such a slave unconsciously internalizes the glorification of 'the holy trinity' — passivity, apathy, and conformity. Materialism seems to be almost conveniently wed to the industrial world's dominant narrative — that Mankind was made to conquer and rule the planet. For, if nothing was seen as material (including ourselves) then how could this domination narrative be justified? If there is no material then there is nothing to dominate. If there's nothing to dominate, then the totalitarian industrial lifestyle is a complete farce. And, in a society vehemently defined by hierarchy and patriarchy the drive for domination always requires slaves to fulfill the upper echelon's bidding. But to unequivocally seal the deal the slaves also had to be totally manipulated into believing that they somehow benefit from the domination agenda/vision — pounded mercilessly into the consensus consciousness by the elite minority.
It never occurred to indigenous cultures of the world to give meaningless credence to units of measurement, especially in the context of conceptualized numbers and quantifiability. They know with incontrovertible wisdom that no matter how technologically advanced a civilization may be — life, time and the universe are all immeasurable — an eternal mystery in which to celebrate — not a problem to be solved. Indigenous cultures never even required written modes of language, for they knew that oral tradition is what is truly sacred because it is the only way to most efficiently and intimately pass on wisdom and knowledge from generation to generation, even in the face of planetary cataclysm. There is no legitimate sacredness in numbers, symbols, and the like, for the simple reason that they need to be written down to confirm their abstract existence. True sacredness lies purely in the integrity of the relationship we have with ourselves and the whole community of life, to which we are inextricably connected.
Fundamentalist materialism is ubiquitous. As soon as one lends himself to the perception that he is strictly his physiology and superficial appearance; that he is only his body and his mind — defined exclusively as a singular form separate from everything else around him — he then cultivates a ripe breeding ground for empowering this dubious phenomenon — producing the premise necessary for egotism and psycho-spiritual illness to exponentially flourish. Materialism feeds and empowers the ego-mind. The ego is the overshadowing psychic force driving the self-perpetuating illusion of materialistic self-image. It's the voice that tells you that you are what you label yourself to be; that you are your thoughts; that you are something to be defined. When in truth, nothing is definable. We are all simply an amalgamation of quantum energy — part of an incomprehensible process of energy and frequency convergence within a vast cosmological continuum of expansion and contraction.
Oddly enough, the illusory lens of materiality is not something that needs to be overcome or defeated. It is just something that ought to be understood for what it is — irrevocably redundant. It seems that the perception of materiality itself is preprogrammed to be horrified by the prospect of authentically exploring the mysteriousness of life and death — incapable of acknowledging that both are simply two different states of being in harmony with one another — dictated by Nature's laws of impermanence and thermodynamics. The truth is, every single atom in the universe is a pure symbiotic embodiment of beauty and potentiality in chaotic harmony within a mysterious, ever-expanding, inexplicable continuum of interdependence. Everything and nothing is all one. And in reality, what we call 'the body' is just a very slow, hyper-condensed vibration interwoven with countless other vibrations and frequencies that are mostly invisible to our limited six-sense spectrum.
There is no material, as proven emphatically by Quantum Physics. We are here to enjoy the experience of simply being alive, and perpetually ameliorate the conditions upon which every living being, human and non-human, depends completely. For, every single iota of suffering experienced by another living being anywhere is a monumental failure. For, it is not just the other that is suffering, it is also you that is suffering. Since we are all interconnected we are all directly and indirectly responsible for each others' bliss and misery. In a world of global technical abundance potentiality (in conjunction with honoring the finite nature of abundance in the context of natural law) — the notion of materiality coupled with its separation-generating assumptions is obviously a grotesque abomination projecting a deleterious disregard for planetary balance and evolutionary stability.
Does the human species have the emotional, intellectual and conscious courage to reverse the psychological damage caused by the premise of material separation? I see the answer as irrelevant, as pertinent as the question may seem. What is relevant and meaningful now, only, is to openly invoke the conversation challenging the many assumptions buried underneath the monstrosity that is materialism. Because pretentious, ignorant silence is grossly unacceptable. What the human species is experiencing is the imminent, long-overdue fall of the ideological imperialism of materialism.
Out of the horrific dehumanization of human existence through materialistic values comes a social rebirth — a revitalization of the perception of oneness and the sheer beauty of everlasting mystery. Materialism is an ideology claiming to have the answers. Whereas the notion of mystery, in the context of human life, ushers a social paradigm devoted to questions. Questions are the soul; the life-blood of evolutionary potentiality. Allowing the presuppositional fervor of materialism to persistently remain at the forefront of human psychology is a catastrophe in the making, especially given the acceleration of mass extinction of life on Earth due to morally bankrupt, human industrial activity.
The real question is: Can children be loved more than the commitment to sustain a materialistic socioeconomic model that's murdering the planet? The answer to this question will undoubtedly be revealed in the coming years as we bare witness to the steady disintegration of social conditions and ecological integrity. How far will Industrial Man go to sustain our current obsolete materialistic value-orientations; cloaked and reinforced by an unsustainable set of living arrangements? At this juncture, it seems clear that he is zestfully committed to going all the way, and beyond...
